Our take

Threads has started testing Gems, a purple badge it hands to public posts and direct replies that drive standout conversations. An automated system picks Gems once a day, judging perspective, real back-and-forth discussion and originality, not follower count. Reposts and posts crossposted from Instagram can't win, and replies to replies don't count. Only US users can receive Gems during the test.

Threads just told everyone what it wants: native, original posts that start a proper conversation. Follower count doesn't matter here, which means a small brand with a sharp opinion can beat a big one with a reposted graphic.

The bad news for lazy posting: if you crosspost from Instagram, you're out. Auto-sharing your Reels caption to Threads won't earn a Gem.

We treat Threads as a free testing ground for angles. Post the opinion, watch which ones get people arguing in the replies, then turn the winners into Reels and put paid behind the outliers. That's the organic engine room working the way it should.
