Google says it will support a shared AI training 'policy token' in robots.txt, based on the IETF AIPREF working group. A site sets one training preference that every participating AI provider follows.
The catch sits in Google's wording. If you opt out with the shared token and don't name Google-Extended, Google treats it as a Google-Extended block. Google ties Google-Extended to appearing and getting clicks in Gemini Apps answers.
Nothing changes until 2027. The job now is knowing what your robots.txt says and why.
Do this this week
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and list every AI crawler it names.
Write down, in one line, whether you want AI answers to cite you.
Diary a robots.txt review for early 2027 when the shared token goes live.
