Our take

Baymard Institute published new guidance on product spec sheets, the table of facts on a product page. Its research rates 64% of ecommerce sites' spec sheet UX as poor or mediocre, and finds 30% of sites have severe issues with specs across products of the same type.

Specs sit at the moment of highest intent. A shopper has found the product and wants to be sure. If they can't scan it, don't understand a term, or find the units change between two similar products, they go and check somewhere else. Often they don't come back.

Baymard's fixes are simple: one column with labels on the left, key details first, jargon explained, and the same names, order and units on every similar product. These are exactly the tiny things that shouldn't matter, but do.
